# Listen & Type

> Listening and pronunciation cards.

## What & why

A **Listen & Type** card asks the question with sound. The learner hears a clip and
responds — what did they hear, what does it mean, how is it said. It's the type built
for the part of language you can't learn by reading: listening and pronunciation.

## When it beats Basic

Reach for it whenever the _sound_ is the thing being learned — a word's pronunciation, a
phrase caught at natural speed, a note or interval in music, any ear-training subject.
A written card can't test whether a learner recognises a word when they hear it; an
audio card can.

Keep the answer short and self-gradable, the same as any card — a _Type the answer_
answer must be **200 characters or fewer**. And make sure the clip is clear — audio
quality is the learning here. Every clip has to be one you're allowed to share, with its

**A good fit:** a clip of a native speaker saying _"¿Cómo estás?"_ — the learner types
what it means, or how it's written.

## In the editor

Drop an audio file for the prompt (any common format — it's converted to MP3
automatically; **clips must be under 60 seconds** so a card stays one short prompt) and
write the **answer** the learner types. Options: a short **hint** shown on the answer
side; a **difficulty**; and a **grading** mode — _Type the answer_ (the default: the
learner types what they hear and it's checked leniently, marking a one- or two-letter
slip as _Almost_) or _Reveal & self-rate_ (listen, reveal, rate yourself — best when
typing the exact wording wouldn't be fair). You can add a second clip as a
**pronunciation reference** shown with the answer.
